●Don’t judge a book by its cover.

●Don’t lock the stable door afer the horse is stolen.

●Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Do you know you can tell how old a horse is by looking at its teeth? The longer the teeth look, the older the horse is. How old do you think this horse is?

A young horse can run faster and work harder than an old horse. Because of this, a young horse is more expensive than an old horse. When people buy a horse they look in its mouth to see how old it is.

In Englisgh we sometimes say “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” Imagine if someone gave you a horse as a gift. It would be very rude to check its teeth. It doesn’t matter how old the horse is if it’s a gift. The important thing is that someone was kind enough to give you the horse!

Of course not many people get given horses. The saying really means that if you get a gift from a friend you shouldn’t try to work out how much it’s worth, or point out what’s wrong with it. You should just be happy they thought about you. Also if something lucky happens to you, you shouldn’t ask too many questions. Just be happy that you’re having a lucky day. Remember: Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!

●Don’t put the cart before the horse.

Eat like a horse.
Work like a horse.
Tell that to the horses!
You can take a horse to the water, but you can’t make him drink.
Don’t ride the high horse.
A good horse cannot be of a bad colour.
A horse may stumble on four feet.
A running horse needs no spur.
The common horse is worst shod.
Hair by hair you will pull out the horse’s tail.

●Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
(don‘t risk everything you have on a single plan or idea; don‘t forcus or invest too much in one specific area)(注:只用 basket,而不用 box 或 bag,也许因为从前农夫把鸡蛋拾起後,都放在篮子里。) If you are spending all your money on that stock, you are putting all your eggs in one basket.(假如你把所有的钱投资在一种股票上,那就太冒险了。)I don‘t want to put all my eggs in one basket.(我不想冒著孤注一掷的风险。)

●Early to bed and early to rise/Makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

●The early bird catches the worm.

●Every cloud has a silver lining.
Every cloud has a silver lining. Blindness has made him more single-minded in pursuing his musical career.(祸兮福所倚,失明使他更加专心发展他的音乐事业)。
Look on the bright side.向好的方面想/ It can’t be all bad.(不会所有事情都那么糟)。
